Friday Day 1.............Travel Journal

I hope the students over the weekend enjoyed their Character Construction Marathon, and let me tell you it was a marathon.  I knew these classes would be non-stop and they were but for the most part they finished and just needed to do a few extra tweeking when they got home.  You all know if you have ever taken any of my classes that the goal is to have projects you can finish in class and take it home to enjoy and not stuck in a closet somewhere unfinished.  Not knowing how long each of these would take it was a little uncertain but for the most part they did have completed 2 of the 3 projects.

We had several new students and several at the last minute cancel for various reasons but we still had a great group.  The two gentlemen on the left of me in this photo flew in from California to take the classes. Greg and Anson were troopers to come all the way to Oklahoma for a weekend to take 3 classes and listen to  us Okies for two days.  I hope we didn't wear them out.  They were a delight to have and we sure hope they come back!  Thanks guys!

Saturday Day 2 afternoon Patriotic Pinwheel...............

This was a little tricky to try and change up the tablescapes for each class while the students were still working on their projects, but I wanted each class to be special so thanks everyone for letting me interrupt and change up things.......

She may kill me for this photo but I thought it was sweet!

Can you tell by the photo we all had a little fun and I had no control by the end of the day............

 

Well I can say one thing about this weekend we did it!  I never dreamed we could have 3 classes in two days............WOW!  Some of you took all 3 classes or maybe 1 or two but you all did an amazing job and I hope I didn't wear you out. One thing about the group of students we have you always come to class ready to work and always put up with little delays but you just keep on and work hard to get the project finished and I thank you!  And Thank You to Cindy for The Paper Crown.........if it wasn't for you we would not have such a special place to come and create.   

I celebrated another birthday last week so Miss Cindy surprised me friday during class with these gorgeous flowers and this delicious cherry tart............Thank You!

Thank You each student for making our first Character Construction weekend marathon another event to remember.  Hopefully we can have the creator of these wonderful stamps join us next time, Catherine Moore.  Thanks Catherine for these wonderful stamps!

getting ready and supply list for those in class this weekend...............

 

 

All the years I have been teaching classes I have never had a time that I thought of doing 3 classes in 2 days..........until now!  I keep going over my list to make sure I have all the supplies needed and counted numerous times each item that goes into the kits.........I think I am pretty much finished and now all I need to do is do a little baking and I think I am ready for the big Character Construction weekend........should be fun and I am looking forward to doing one of my most favorite things "Playing with Paper Dolls!"

For those of you taking these classes whether you are in one class or all three this is what you are expected to bring:

Your basic class kit.......make sure  you have a good pair of small scissors, we do a lot of small little pieces and you can make it look so professional and its so much easier if you have those. And a large pair!

sand paper

ink pads with distressing ink ( this is if you like to distress your projects)

glue gun and UHU glue stick

gold leaf pen

Remember I usually have all supplies so if you forget something we will have those for you.  Cindy always carries UHU and gold leaf pens and other supplies I usually use in all of my classes

So we can get these projects finished in the time we have scheduled we all need to be on time. Friday's Class for the Travel Journal starts at 1-5. Saturdays classes start for the Santos at 10:30-1:30. We will break for an hour so you will have time to get lunch or if you want you can brown bag it! this is how I start........

 

Several weeks ago my friend Kay gave me one of her Art tool lazy susan spinners.........I know there is an appropriate name but lets just call it this for now. This has definitely changed how convenient for me to move my pens from room to room...........it is usually sitting on the ottoman in the family room where I do most of my doodling.  Just thought you'd like to know how I keep my pens readily available!

Last week I said I would share how I go about doodling..

THese are the pens I use.  I have found the smash black pen is great for the outline of the doodling.  No smearing of the lines and I love the point.  For all the rest I use the sharpie in every point.  I also use the micron pen for the really small details.........

Then for any of the dots I love the sharpie white and for gold or silver details I use these Pentel silver and gold.

For patterns you can use an already made shape or freehand and make your own........

 

trace around your pattern shape and then start to draw basic lines. If  you have eyes or fins like the fish, draw those in..........then start to doodle. Fill in the doodles with your colored sharpies or copic markers.  I love the colors of copic but when you do as much as I do and they are so expensive I try not to use them as much .......but I do use them. 

 

Cut around each shape. I always like to back it with a solid color such as black or gold. Sometimes if I think it looks like it needs something a little different I may use a color.

 

For these I used craft paper and you can tell it is a more softer duller color.......I haven't backed these yet.

 For white paper I use the real heavy 110lb. card stock.  If you don't have that heavy just the regular cardstock will work.

bread recipe

 

Jewel's White Bread

 

2 pkg. yeast

1/2 cup lukewarm water

1 tbls. sugar

Dissolve the yeast and sugar in water. Cover and let stand for 45 min.

 

1 egg beaten

1/2 cup melted shortening or canola oil

2 cups lukewarm water

1 1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 cup sugar

8 cups flour

add the yeast mixture to the liquid mixture and slowly add the flour mixture using the dough hook on mixer and mix until it is soft and smooth consistency.  Let rise in covered bowl about 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.  Punch down and let rise again.  After the last time it has risen prepare and divide accordingly to eith 3-4 loaf pans or 2 loaf pans and the rest for rolls, cinnamon rolls or cheese rolls.  If you do cinnamon rolls it will make a 8x8 pan and the same with the cheese rolls. The cinnamon rolls you can roll into a rectangle spread with butter sugar cinnamon and brown sugar. Roll up lengthwise and cut into 1" slices.  Same with the cheese rolls, butter parmesan and cheddar cheese and a little dill and parsley. Roll up like the cinnamon rolls and sprinkle more parmesan cheese on top.  Just plain rolls I usually roll little balls and place two in muffin pans and bake.  The times are approximate, the bread will take 20-25 minutes at 350 and not quite that long for the rolls.  Hope this is as much fun for you as it has been for me in the last 40 years.  ( Jewel was my husbands moms name)

summer weekend...........

 

I use to bake bread more often than I do now......... a couple weekends ago I thought I would get out the OLD kitchen aid mixer with dough hook and bake some heavenly smelling bread!  This recipe is really a no fail.  My mother in law gave me this recipe the first year we married and I have been making it for 40 years.  this recipe made two loaves and enough left over to make a batch of cinnamon rolls and some cheese rolls. I LOVE THE SMELL OF BREAD BAKING!!!!!!! Who doesn't............I gave one loaf to mom and some of the cinnamon rolls and put the cheese rolls in the freezer for another time.  Tom has had fresh toast for the past week.........

 

Enjoy your weekend........I just returned home late last night from 3 days of walking the halls of Dallas Gift Market!  My feet are tired and I am trying to regroup and get ready for our Paper Crown Character Construction weekend next week..........I hope I am ready! You know after I doodled with the little jointed bears I thought " WHY NOT" do other animals and etc.  So like always I just get to doodling and can't stop.........if I have a few minutes in between something I get my black pen out and start in..........In a few days I will share with you what I use and how I go about making these little colorful doodles!

hello tuesday............

 

While on vacation in California I always go to one of my most favorite fabric stores in Morro Bay....called the Cotton Ball!  They always seem to have the most wonderful and different fabrics.......I always walk out with fun and unusual goodies.   The last couple times I have picked up some of their hand dyed velvets.  The  muted colors are beautiful and always add that little touch of color and unique look to projects........!

Jicama Salsa..........

I think I shared this recipe with you last year..........just in case you don't remember or would like to try it I think this is a great time of year to make..........Enjoy!

Jicama Salsa

1 cup blueberries

1 cup strawberries

1 cup jicama

1/3 cup cilantro

1/4 cup red onion, chopped

2 tbls. finely chopped jalapeno

1 large lime juice

salt

tortilla chips

Cut the strawberries and jicama a small chopped pieces. Add all other ingredients and squeeze the lime along with the salt and serve with chips.  This is so refreshing and so festive for this time of year.
